This is a story about change, responsibility, and above all, hope… just one family’s transformation fueled by a simple hope for a better future for themselves and their planet.
My name is Michelle and I am a Christian wife and mother of 2 boys as well as a speech language pathologist by trade. I have always had an interest in the environment, frugality, sustainability, and self sufficiency. Even in my younger years you could see the green oozing from me. My favorite cartoon was Captain Planet. He was my hero and I was determined to help him take pollution down to zero (straight from his theme song). This passion for green has run constant through my life, but hasn’t come full circle until recently.
As an adult, it began disguised in the name of frugality. We cloth diapered, dried our clothes on a line, reused plastic baggies, made our own cleaners, among other things, in effort to save money. My inner green also rejoiced at the positive impacts these choices were having on the environment. These choices were the seeds that grew into a cause.
We started gardening, which led to composting and canning. We began researching where our foods and products came from and what was in them as well as the effects they had on our health. This acquired information moved us to go organic and chemical free as much as possible, realizing that the best products to consume are the ones that we make ourselves.
Now we embark on our next project…creating a suburban homestead in Phoenix, Arizona. Our back yard is slowly being transformed into a micro farm where we can grow a large portion of our food. Our home is gradually being purged of plastics and toxins. A small flock of chickens has been added to the family. We are being educated consumers and stewards of the earth, and, ultimately, healthier and happier people.
Join my family as we naturally wander through this process of leading a more natural, healthier, and sustainable lifestyle.
