With all the peanut butter recalls lately, I figured it was about time to make my own. It really isn’t that hard. I am a huge
fan of Alton Brown’s show Good Eats and found a recipe for peanut butter from one of his shows. Now I am not always a “follow the recipe exactly” kinda girl, so I winged it with the the amounts.
According to Alton Brown, you will need:
- 15 ounces shelled skinned roasted peanuts ( Mr. Brown suggests using Spanish peanuts due to their higher oil content)
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1.5 teaspoons honey
- 1.5 tablespoons peanut oil
Directions:
- Place peanuts, salt, and honey in a food processor and process for 1 minute.
- Scrape down the sides.
- Continue to process while slowly drizzling in the peanut oil until mixture is smooth. About 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.
- Place peanut butter in an airtight container and refrigerate. This mixture is good for up to 2 months in the refrigerator.
Now, here is how I did it. I just bought a random amount of peanuts in the bulk section at Sprouts. I processed these peanuts for about a minute with salt and raw desert honey also from Sprouts. I chose raw desert honey for two reasons. Raw honey is supposedly good for you and the desert part is for allergies. Apparently, since the honey is made from local bees that pollinate local plants that we are allergic to, our allergic reactions to said local plants will be diminished. I am no doctor and I have no scientific evidence on hand to support this claim…it is just something I have heard about.
Side Note: My step mother was told to take a shot of apple cider vinegar with the mother and a shot of raw honey made locally to help with her allergies…and it worked. Her allergies got noticably better.
Back to peanut butter. So, I too scraped down the sides and started drizzling peanut oil into the mixture while processing. Since I did not use any specified amounts, I drizzled away until the peanut butter reached a pleasing consistency.
Conclusion: Homemade peanut butter is so very yummy and I will never go back. I plan on trying almond butter and sun butter (sunflower seeds) too.
