Just when I thought I could start planting my fall garden, another heat wave and dust storm (haboob) struck the Phoenix area. We’re talking highs of 111 and lows in the 90′s! Last night another haboob rolled across the valley with high winds and tons of dust. Had to go play hide and seek this morning with all the yard items blown around the yard. This crazy Arizona weather is making it real hard to work in the garden.
My seed order from Botanical Interests finally arrived. The first package got lost in the mail so, Botanical Interests shipped me a new one. Now I am just waiting for this heat to die down just a little bit before sowing my fall seeds. Figure I would be shooting myself in the foot to try to grow something from seed with these soaring temperatures.
I did lose another pumpkin plant to the heat, so we are down to only 2 from the original 8 I started inside, and they aren’t looking so good themselves. I am really bummed that I didn’t get my Lumina and Jack Be Little pumpkin seeds in time to plant this year. Looks like my pumpkin patch was just not meant to be this year.
On a good note, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my watermelon I planted back in the spring have survived the summer and started growing again. We didn’t get any watermelons from them before the heat stunted their growth. Maybe they will keep it up and we will have some watermelon this fall.
